- Hello
- So as a recap of my idea, I am going to create a illustrated animated version of a historical figure that will be used to teach children the topic that they are associated with. I wanted to do the subject of history, my two potential figures were Nefertiti and Anne Boleyn, with the subjects of Ancient Egypt, and The Tudors and Stuarts.
- I chose Anne Boleyn and the Tudors to be my final topic. I chose this because I had more prior knowledge of this topic and have a greater interest in it than Egypt.
- I began by looking into the topics taught within the subject. My favourite was Religion, as it has a direct link the figure that I wanted to draw, as she was one of the causes for Henry VIII’s break with Rome.
- The points that I wanted to hit within this topic was Catholic and Protestant, what are they? Henry VIII’s split with Rome, and the dissolution of the monastery.
- I began writing the script by doing research into each of these topics, then I built up the text based off of important events and facts. I still need to refine the script massively, as I threw all the information into it, and some is not relevant to the topic so can be cut. I also need to format it so that it sounds like Anne is saying it.
- I then began to draw the character, I was unsure of what style I wanted to do, so I did two initial sketches.
- The first style that I tried was a cartoonist style. I began by creating a guide base, then slowly drawing each part. I chose to do a black outline around the drawing as it gives the classic cartoon style. I then coloured it in.
-
- I then tried more of a realism style; I began this by using a reference image from the film ‘The other Boleyn girl’. I created basic guides then started to draw using them. I draw realism by layering multiple colours, then refining it by adding more details further into the piece.
- I only did the blocking in, as this was just initial drawings to test the styles. I personally preferred the cartoon style, as I tend to draw realism mostly, so it shows some depth in my drawings. Also, it will be easier to format for the Character Animator file.
- I decided to refine the drawing however, as I was unhappy with how certain aspects looked. I wanted to create a more defined face. I began by adding more contorting into the face, to show the shape. Then I drew in the nose, as I really disliked the original one.
- I then had to draw the mouth sets for Character Animator, so she will be able to talk. I began by finding a template that showed which shapes I needed to draw. I then drew each of these shapes in the style of the original mouth that I drew.
- After that I had to set the file up so that I could import it into Character Animator. When I draw, I tend to just draw and different layers, and not name them or sort them. This meant that I had to sort out all of my layers to merge them together. I then formatted it into the correct folders for CA.
- Then I imported the character into Character Animator to do initial testing.
- (Overlay the footage of eyes) I immediately saw that the pupils did not have the correct bounds. This is where I looked back at my Photoshop file and realised that I had not added a Pupil range bound for the eyes, I then added one, and the pupils looked a lot better. They still do not fully work correctly, but I am going to keep working on that.
- I then noticed that I had accidentally forgotten to draw in the blinking for the eyes, this is something that I will work on after this presentation.
- The eyebrows moved too much up and down. I fixed this by in CA Puppet tracking behaviours changing the range that they move.
- The final problem I noticed in that the head was not moving separately from the body, the whole character would turn when I tilted my head. This seems to be a problem with the formatting of the Photoshop file, which I am going to work on after this presentation.
- I then looked into how I am going to record the final character. There are two ways that I know of, recording in real-time, or importing pre-recorded audio. I think that I am most likely to pre-record the audio, as this means that I can edit any mistakes out of it, as well as it not having to be recorded in one take.
- What I’m doing next is, refining the script, detail editing on the character, fixing the rest of the problems, final script recording.
